10 Hated Video Game Mechanics The World Was Wrong About
2. Community World-Building & Arduous Exploration - Death Stranding
The community game that comes together, indeed. We all thought Kojima was bonkers when he was touting his "strand this, stick that" nonsense, but in a way he's actually delivered.
Y'see, whilst the world of DS is an absolutely beautiful one to take in, it can be a chore trekking on foot everywhere. It does give that sense of isolation and that the world is truly on the brink, but juggling your goods all the time does wear thin. As do your goods, annoyingly.
But it's when you start connecting to the network that Kojima's vision comes into place. Sure, you could build roads and bridges by yourself and using your own resources, but it's a greater feat to see the players all contributing and sharing the wealth.
Considering it was a strong point of contention at announcement, with echoes of an "always on" mentally being cast around, people soon shut up when they realised what was available.
Where we're going, we do need roads, and having a highway built by community effort sure beats taking a motorised trike over boulders any day.
