10 Haunting Video Game Moments We’ll Never Forget

9. The Elevator (Dead Space)

Perhaps the most haunting thing about Dead Space is that we might never get a new instalment. Taking Resident Evil style gameplay into space was a masterstroke, and the series earned plenty of plaudits for its pitch perfect sound design and horrific set pieces, with one of the most effective scenes occurring within the first ten minutes of the game.

The opening of Dead Space is so well paced as we arrive on a seemingly abandoned ship but quickly realise that something has gone terribly wrong. Within moments, grotesque aliens named Necromorphs begin to appear from around every corner, slaughtering the crew and forcing our hero, engineer Isaac Clarke, to flee for his life.

This initial chase sequence is such a great introduction to the game, culminating in a climactic moment when Isaac gets into an elevator and a Necromorph forces its way through the doors. For a brief instant, we tighten our grip on the controller and wonder how we're going to get out of this situation alive, but we can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the doors slam shut once more, crushing the creature in the process.
