10 Hauntingly Dark Secrets In RPGs

6. Not-So-Nice Winter Lodge - Fable 2

Fable is another series that’s got plenty of nastiness injected into its otherwise gorgeous and colourful game world.

In fact, deciding to be evil can transform entire locations into dark and festerous versions of their former selves, just by virtue of the factions you support and the decisions you make. Fable 2 features plenty of chilling quests including one where you assist a father who has lost his child only to discover the children have been kidnapped and eaten by goblin-like creatures. The father’s son transformed into one the creatures and the father killed himself in despair.

The reason that horrifying encounter isn’t our main entry here is that it’s pretty easy to stumble on early in the game.

The Winter Lodge, however, can only be accessed if you manage to get through the Bloodstone Demon Door. Once inside you’ll find yourself in the realm of Albion, home to, among other things, a warm and welcoming forest lodge. Step inside the front door, though, and things take a drastic turn. A chilling side effect blares and everything turns to black and white, the cosy cottage is now a decrepit hell house home to skeletons and torure devices. When you leave the house, the exterior has changed too. Where a pile of wood once sat there is now a decapitated corpse on a stump, and the lamp lined path is now lined with hanging human body parts, cakes, and a bloody sack.

I’m sure this is just how Hansel and Gretel felt.
