10 Hauntingly Dark Secrets In RPGs
4. Cannibals… Again - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is absolutely chock full of side quests, secrets, and terrible humans and this entry involves all three. Also cannibals, because I promised.
Without a Trace is a side story you’ll come across in the Hearts of Stone expansion if you’ve inspected the notice board in Brunwich. A herbalist called Otto Bamber will ask you to search for his missing apprentice near Deadwight Wood. Being the friendly neighborhood Witcher that you are, you’ll mosey on over and discover a blood trail leading to an empty village home to an elderly couple.
If you’re immediately suspicious you are very right to be. The couple insist the man you’re looking for was attacked by wolves. You can end the quest there, but if that isn’t sitting right with you you can choose to continue the investigation at which point you can uncover a hidden cellar door.
Inside you’ll find a chopped up body, the very body you’re looking for, so you’ll head back up and tell the old folks they have some ‘splainin to do.
They fess up to eating the dude but not killing him, insisting they’re too weak to farm so they just went full vulture and took the wolves' scraps. It’s up to you to decide if they’re lying or not and you can either make them promise not to eat people again or kill them off.
