10 Horror Video Games Dying To Be Remade

6. The Suffering

The Suffering
Surreal Software

It's surprising that, despite two critically acclaimed entries, The Suffering is a franchise that has remained dormant since 2005. With truly original monster design, setting, and a decent morality system, it seems madness to let The Suffering rot any longer.

You play as Torque, a man on death row for murdering his family (though he claims he cannot remember the night and is innocent), when an earthquake strikes and unleashes supernatural threats upon Abbot State Penitentiary on Carnate Island off Maryland's coast, the game's excellent setting.

With monsters which reflect the execution methods and horrific past crimes of Carnate Island, the ability to play in either first or third person, and a good/bad/neutral morality system throughout the game, influencing which of the three endings you receive, The Suffering is an excellent all round horror experience and one that is more action-heavy than some offerings on this list.

Once again, and something of a necessity for horror games, the story stands out. The Suffering finds itself engaging with some fairly heavyweight themes and yet manages to balance these aspects of the narrative and lore with its action and enjoyable mechanics.

Both The Suffering and its sequel are obvious choices for remakes.
