These days From Software are known for their massively influential, notoriously difficult titles such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and the upcoming open world epic Elden Ring. Before they carved out a niche for themselves, their projects were slightly more obscure, including the experimental survival horror game Echo Night.

Echo Night was released in 1998 for the PlayStation and is a first person game following a man named Richard after he receives a letter from his missing father. The police who are investigating his disappearance bring you to a burned down house where you are transported into the past via a painting where you then attempt to unravel the mystery of the missing man.

Navigating a haunted ship known as the Orpheus, Richard must aid or elude ghosts in order to progress, with hostile spirits able to be banished by switching on the lights of the room they appear in. If helped, some of these entities will reward Richard with items that can be used to solve certain puzzles or achieve a different ending scene.

With a mysterious story, strong visuals for the time of release and a unique gameplay loop, Echo Night is a special survival horror experience.
