Less than a decade ago, free to play games used to be only available on mobile and did not have that big of an impact on the gaming landscape as a whole. But fast forward to the present and they are almost everywhere.

In fact, not only do free to play games dominate the mobile gaming scene, but they are now among some of the most profitable games available today.

An early trailblazer for this shift towards the free to play model was of course Fortnite, with its super popular battle royale mode and battle pass system earning it billions of dollars in a short amount of time.

Now almost every major publisher has followed in Epic Games' footsteps.

EA has Apex Legends, Ubisoft is planning Assassin's Creed Infinity and Activision has Call of Duty Warzone. All these games are free to play and are entirely supported by battle passes and microtransactions.

So as long as these games continue to rake in the cash, publishers will continue to support their development for years to come. Here's hoping that it does not come at the cost of more creative games getting developed in favour of another generic microtransaction-riddled game as a service.
