10 Huge Unresolved Mysteries In Mario Games

2. Who Are Boos Ghosts Of?

Super Mario Confused
Nintendo

From their debut back in Super Mario Bros. 3, through every single spinoff game and their appearances in Mario's latest releases, Boos have become an enemy almost as iconic as Goombas, Koopas or even Bowser himself. These ghostly fiends are usually found inhabiting ghost houses that players will have to navigate through in order to progress through a world. These levels are usually designed with fiendish traps and puzzles to soldier through, with the Boos hiding away in the shadows until Mario turns his back from them.

However, besides what players see in the game, there isn't a whole lot of backstory to these creatures to go off. In saying that, Nintendo gives a slight sliver of background to these ghosts in Paper Mario, where Igor the shopkeeper reveals: "He probably was a merchant before he became a Boo." This could potentially imply that the Boos players see roaming the haunted mansions of the Mushroom Kingdom were once some of its inhabitants. It would be some plot twist if it turned out the Boos we see diving towards Mario or Luigi in future games were the victims of the plumbing duo's ground-pounding in the releases before.
