10 Huge Video Game Franchises That Are Doomed To Fail
2. Far Cry
Franchise fatigue is a very real thing - sometimes an IP just fails to provide enough stylistic, gameplay, and narrative innovation to keep players engaged, such that the critical and commercial reception begins a downward slide.
There's perhaps no greater example of a blockbuster IP just playing the played-out hits than Far Cry, which offers the most formulaic gameplay loop of any Ubisoft franchise - and that's really saying something.
Despite attempts in recent years to re-energise the stagnating brand with spin-offs like Far Cry Primal and Far Cry New Dawn, the just-released Far Cry 6 received the mainline series' worst reviews to date, many citing its frustrating willingness to recycle the same stale formula.
Far Cry 6 also released to underwhelming sales, posting 50% less digital sales than Far Cry 5 did in the UK, and while still sure to turn a profit for Ubisoft, seems to signify that players are finally growing tired of the series refusal' to offer substantial innovations.
Long-term, it's tough to imagine the series surviving much longer without some major refinements.
