8. Master Chief - Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Next on the list, we come to another heavily-armoured unit who can’t resist a little galactic warfare. Hey, they make for good protagonists.
Halo’s main man and mascot, Master Chief, is a staple of the gaming industry. Originally appearing in 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, this space marine is quickly sprung into action when his ship falls under attack by alien invaders at the beginning of this monumental first-person shooter series.
Halo has been a ground-breaking success for Microsoft, with this exclusive IP being a system seller for each and every generation of Xbox console so far. This is, in no small part, due to its insanely addictive multiplayer modes, but these are not the only factors that make Halo so special.
The Halo games have a well-written, powerful and sometimes emotional story behind each of their campaigns. More so than many of their competitors, who place online gaming at the forefront and consider their offline campaigns to be an after-thought.
The wars between the United Nations Space Command and The Covenant, alongside the invasion of The Flood and, of course, the titular Halos, have spawned comics and novels to coincide with the games. Taking the charge in all of these tales, sporting his famous green armour, is our boy- Master Chief.
