8. Sony: Pricing The PlayStation 3 At "599 US Dollars"

If Microsoft's decline has spanned the last decade and Nintendo's ran from 2012 to 2017, Sony's darkest hour ran from 2005 to 2008. Fresh off their wild success with the PlayStation 2 (which remains the highest selling console of all time), the company got cocky and greedy. They poured a ton of cash into creating a new cell processor for their next system, intent on making the most powerful console on the market. All this effort poured into technology distracted from what really mattered: games. At E3 2006, Sony's pompous attitude was put on full display to the gaming community.

At the drab and dismal press conference, Kaz Hirai took the stage and said the infamous line: "It requires a huge financial investment; 599 US dollars, but we must take risks to reap the rewards". In one fateful move, Sony had put a sizeable amount of gamers off the PlayStation 3 and branded themselves as an arrogant company in the process. The internet was quick to ridicule both them and the system no end, the phrase quickly reaching memeable status across the community.

As the PS3 came out of the gate struggling against the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, this moment would continue to stick out more than the console's lacklustre line-up of games and reliance on gimmicks. Eventually in 2008, Sony dropped the price and the exclusive titles finally started to deliver, but the crippling error remains etched in gamer's minds.
