10 Incredible Recent RPGs That Surprised EVERYONE

3. Citizen Sleeper

Developed by Jump Over the Edge, Citizen Sleeper centres around a digitised human consciousness in a synthetic body, who's forced to fight for freedom and survival after escaping from their masters.

Players have a choice to go down branching paths and are allocated points based on their decisions, which helps them improve their abilities. Although these systems are standard for RPGs, the indie hit is unlike any other game in the genre, since there's no conventional combat, levelling system, or open-world exploration. Instead, gameplay focuses on dice-based mechanics and story outcomes based directly off your choices.

Losing doesn't result in a "Game Over," but instead reshapes the story. As such, there are consequences for every action, forcing players to adapt if they hope to receive a specific outcome. The quality of the writing is astounding, which adds weight to the story, since you must consider how your actions affect, not just you but everyone else.

Citizen Sleeper proves a simple narrative-driven RPG that values storytelling and worldbuilding can be just as powerful, if not more so than flashy AAA role-players. And with the success of the sequel released this year, this is one franchise worth looking out for in the future.
