Metroid 2 – one the greatest handheld shooters ever made – was bound to receive an unauthorised HD remake, especially considering the extent to which Nintendo have failed to provide one themselves.

That said, AM2R is more than a mere HD remake, it’s a complete overhaul, faithful to the original in spirit. Gameplay wise, the characters handles more like Samus does in recent iterations – such as Metroid Fusion – but besides that, it’s fairly loyal to the source material.

In the game, players assume the role of legendary bounty-hunter, Samus Aran, tasked with the eradication of a newly discovered lifeform, Metroid. The remake includes new features – including a map, new areas and minibosses – and is generally considered to be a huge improvement over the original, expanding upon aspects which were previously subject to criticism, yet preserving qualities which made the original such a unique, memorable experience.

Unlike Valve and Vivendi Games, Nintendo however did not reward creative director, Milton Guasti for his labours, instead sending him a DMCA takedown request.

In September 2016, work stopped on the project out of respect for the series creators, and is unlikely to continue. Despite the game’s many achievements – as well as the praise it’s received from mainstream media – it’s been shelved indefinitely, which is a cryin' shame.
