Roller Coaster Tycoon is a well-known franchise having released titles from 1999 until as recently as 2016. The game is something of a classic in the management/simulation genre, but most people don't realize one person created it.

The first Roller Coaster Tycoon was the brainchild of one Chris Sawyer, a programmer who took the concept of roller coasters and his particular need to organize and manage things and made it into a hit gaming franchise. He got into the idea of managing coasters while working on a sequel to Transport Tycoon Deluxe but became distracted.

Using the same basic game engine, Sawyer created RollerCoaster Tycoon for release on PC. It was later ported, sequeled, and remade on every system imaginable; some feat considering it was originally coded by just one man.

Interestingly, Sawyer hated rollercoasters before developing his game but eventually became obsessed with them. It was initially titled "White Knuckle" but was renamed and introduced to the Tycoon lineup upon release. It is one of the most successful simulation titles on the market having sold over four million copies by 2002, with earnings in excess of $100 million.
