Minecraft was in development for over three years before it was released commercially in 2011. Prior to that point, it was in various stages of development, but during that time, it managed to generate a significant amount of money and support from players who helped Markus "Notch" Persson refine and improve the game.

Since Minecraft officially launched, it has been ported to nearly every video game platform on the planet. You can play it on your computer, your console, your phone, and everything else in-between. Minecraft went on to spawn a variety of sequels and became something of a cultural icon.

Persson famously sold his creation to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion (Bringing in $1.3 billion for himself) making him the highest-earning independent game designer in history. When he sold his creation, he stopped working on the game and handed it to other developers working at/for Microsoft.

Since Minecraft first launched, it has sold over 150 million copies with more being sold every day. By 2018, an estimated 91 million players were active in the game each month, and that number has only increased since that time.
