2. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Silicon Knights

Eternal Darkness is a horror anthology that centres around a woman called Alexandra, who discovers a magical sect is attempting to summon an ancient god upon the world.

Though the GameCube exclusive boasts a diverse magical system, a beautiful soundtrack, and a phenomenal voice-cast, Silicon Knight's masterful work has become iconic for its Sanity Effects.

As our heroes are exposed to demons and ghosts, their mental state wavers, causing them to hallucinate. Not only are the Sanity Effects heart-stoppingly terrifying, some of them go meta. When the game pretends to reset or delete your memory card, you half-expect to have a heart attack.

Even though Eternal Darkness was staggeringly ambitious, it fully delivered on everything it tried to accomplish. But since it was a mature-rated game on an underperforming system, it was no surprise when Eternal Darkness bombed.

Despite being a dud, Eternal Darkness gained a reputation as one of the most inventive horror properties ever made. As a result, the haunting gem should've found a second life on modern systems, as many unappreciated IPs have done before.

And yet, Eternal Darkness has yet to be ported to a single console. This is all the more heartbreaking considering many horror veterans never experienced it once, since the game was only available on a system with a younger demographic.

Even though a remake or remaster would be ideal, the fanbase has grown so impatient over the last 20 years, they'll take a direct port of Eternal Darkness at this point.
