10 Incredibly Calm Moments In Otherwise Intense Games
10. Wake Up Metro: Last Light
The world of Metro is quite aptly a bleak one. Unlike the neo-cowboy infused apocalypses of Fallout and Rage, Metro finds strength and cohesion in the supremely dark atmosphere that eclipses its claustrophobic combat scenarios. Set in the Moscow metro system sometime after a nuclear apocalypse has rendered the earth's surface largely uninhabitable, Metro: Last Light sees players navigating their subterranean world in an effort to quell a struggle between the metro's litany of factions in order to preserve some semblance of humanity in the wake of mutually assured destruction. The game opens with a brilliantly dark slice of gameplay in which the player dreams that he and his comrades are attacked by one of the game's supernatural antagonists. The player watches his friends get torn apart while trying in vein to kill the horrifying creatures. The player wakes from the feverish imaginings to find that they are in relative safety, and as they're allowed to wander from their room the oppressive tone of Metro: Last Light really hits home. In one cramped room there's a man playing a morose tune on a guitar while two others look on. Players find people conversing, training, playing draughts and listening to music; it's the perfect contrast the game's terrifying opening sequence.
