10 Incredibly Calm Moments In Otherwise Intense Games

4. Entering Mexico €“ Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is packed with moments of stupefying calm, but they occur naturally throughout that game's world. In terms of narrative moments of serenity however, Red Dead Redemption still has plenty more to offer players. At about halfway through the game, after completing a daring assault on Fort Mercer, players embark on a mission to cross the border into Mexico with the help of an interminably drunk Irishman named ... Irish. The crossing itself is a frustratingly tense affair, with players attempting to traverse the tumultuous river that splits the two nations by raft, while simultaneously struggling to fend off a multitude of attackers. When we finally step onto Mexican soil and saddle up, ready to ride off into the sun, we're met by one of the game's few musical tracks with lyrics, the song 'Far Away' by José González. It's a beautiful song in a game where music is scarce. Furthermore, it marks the significance of this step into the unknown for the game's protagonist, John Marston. The culmination of music, jaw-dropping visuals and narrative significance is utterly beguiling.
