There will be few gamers who are unaware of this moment, regardless of whether or not they've experienced it for themselves. The moment come towards the end of The Last of Us' stirring narrative after Ellie's harrowing encounter with a cannibal, and shortly before the game's climactic finale €“ that is to say that by this point in the story, player's will have seen enough horror and bloodshed to last them an in-game lifetime. It's a wonderfully simple set-up. Ellie runs off having seen something, forcing players to chase after her as Joel, concerned and nervous that a threat is looming; that recognisable sense of dread sets in as the game tests our connection to the characters once again. This time however, it's not a room full of terrifying Clickers or savage survivors that we're faced with, it's a giraffe. The magisterial grace of the animal is immediately captivating, and watching Ellie interact with it is a truly touching moment in an otherwise horrific post-apocalypse.
