10 Most Infuriating Escort Missions In Gaming History
6. Martin - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Oblivion has a mostly excellent attitude towards vital NPC characters: it gives them "essential" status, meaning that they cannot be killed even if you try to attack them, though this all changes late in the game when you have to escort Martin from the Imperial Palace to the Temple of the One, to do battle with the Daedra. At this point, Bethesda stick a giant middle finger up at the player by removing Martin's essential status, meaning that he can be killed, which results in a Game Over. What's more, Martin is only wearing crappy Emperor Robes, so you have to pretty much spend the entire battle by his side, babysitting him to ensure he doesn't die. And unless you're some sort of preternatural expert at this game, Martin is doing to die. A lot. It doesn't help that Martin's dreadfully-programmed AI means that he actively attacks the Daedra, rather than simply fighting defensively: you must keep an eye on his attack patterns and help slay everything he fights.
