7. Metal Gear Solid 4 - The Dark Ending

It's no secret that Metal Gear Solid 4 was never supposed to be made. Series creator Hideo Kojima constantly planned to retire the series, and even when it was clear that he was going to have to follow up the story to MGS 2, he tried his best to hand off the responsibility to a new director.

Tragically, death threats forced him to return and make the game himself, but that reluctance and the general negativity seeped into the original concepts. For one, the first ending he thought up was set to be way more downbeat, featuring Snake and Otacon completing their mission, but then handing themselves into the authorities. Making it even bleaker, they'd have then been executed for their crimes.

Understandably, this resolution didn't go down well with even the staff working on the game, who protested the decision and prompted a rewrite.

That's the biggest what if? but other, smaller tweaks would have been just as controversial, such as the amount of female nudity that was planned - for instance, with all of the female bosses conceived to be full-frontal in the final game.

Somehow, even with these elements removed, MGS 4 still managed to be the craziest entry in the series.
