8. We Actually Play As Gray Fox
Konami
The Rumour: A popular fan theory doing the rounds online is referred to as the
"Body Double" theory, which posits that Punished Snake is in fact a body double of Big Boss, a role assumed by legendary soldier Gray Fox, who would later become the awesome Cyborg Ninja. We know that Big Boss rescues Frank Jaeger aka Gray Fox from a Vietnamese labour camp in the 1970s, so if that must occur prior to Ground Zeroes, it's entirely possible that he has been fighting alongside Big Boss during the Camp Omega skirmish, and merely assumed his identity during the 9 years that the real Big Boss was in a coma. Plus, many drew their attention to the mysterious "third man" in the hospital room when Big Boss and Kaz Miller are being treated following the events of Ground Zeroes (as shown in early trailers): could it be Gray Fox?
How Likely Is It? The theory doesn't work quite as well since the release of Ground Zeroes, and in honesty, it was always a long shot. It draws a lot of attention to subtle physical differences between Big Boss from MGS3 and The Phantom Pain, though these could merely be re-design choices, and it's certainly not uncharacteristic of the MGS franchise to make retcons here and there, right? Plus, considering how much vitriol fans had for Kojima's Raiden twist in MGS2, it's unlikely he'd dare to pull a fast one on us like this. That and the whole game seems geared around depicting Big Boss' descent into villainy, and making him absent would totally betray that.
2/10.
