10 Insanely Cool Video Game Mechanics You Forgot About

1. Mad Max (2015) - Vehicle Combat

x-men origins
Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment

A game that was unjustly overlooked upon its release in 2015, Avalanche Studio’s Mad Max was a nitro-fuelled joyride of apocalyptic proportion that followed the titular survivor fight across a sprawling wasteland to take down powerful warlord Scabrous Scrotus and their amy of raiders.

Throughout the course of the game, players will scavenge for scrap to upgrade their equipment and engage in satisfyingly slick combat which took its cues from the Arkham series. However, it wouldn’t be a Mad Max game without blistering vehicular action, and this title is full of it.

Alongside using scrap to enhance Max’s weapons and armour, it can also be used to fit his new car, The Magnum Opus, with weaponary and defences. Building and customising the car from scratch is already a fantastic mechanic, but it’s going head-to-head with Scrotus’s forces on the road where this game is at its best.

In addition to ramming and swiping the raiders off the road, Max can utilise side-mounted flamethrowers and shoot at tires and exposed fuel tanks with his shotgun. There’s even a harpoon that can fire explosives or yank enemy drivers from their seats.

Take on heavily armoured convoys to see just how insanely good this mechanic is.
