4. Shaders - Destiny 2

Shaders are a popular kind of item in Bungie's Destiny that allow players to change the color of their equipment. This feature was beloved by fans. With its limited character creation options, shaders went a long way for diversifying player appearances.

Naturally, Bungie brought them back in Destiny 2. Why wouldn't they? It's a fairly basic mechanic seen in similar games. But there was one major change: shaders were now single-use items.

Unlike in the original, where shaders were permanent and could be applied any time, Shaders in Destiny 2 would disappear after one use. This resulted in a form of scarcity that made players not want to use them.

What if you find an amazing shader, apply it to your weapon, then find a new one ten minutes later? This mindset lead to many players anxiously hoarding them, waiting for the "right time."

It should come as no surprise that the reason for this was that shaders were now available for purchase. Oops, you wasted that shader you were saving! No worries. Sooner or later its bound to turn up in a loot box. And then you'll be even more anxious about wasting it, since it cost real money.

Bungie eventually conceded, making shaders permanent again.
