10 Intense Shifts In Gameplay That Came Out Of Nowhere
7. The Random Space Harrier Homage - Bayonetta
Bayonetta may be a fundamentally ridiculous game, but gameplay-wise you pretty much know what you're getting - hilariously over-the-top balletic carnage in which the titular protagonist wipes out a seemingly unending horde of beasties.
But the late-game chapter "Isla Del Sol" throws a spanner in the works by switching to an entire different genre and style of play for its opening sequence.
In an homage to the classic game Space Harrier, the first half of the chapter is a rail shooter, with Bayonetta riding a cruise missile to Isla del Sol as the player fends off myriad enemies - including several boss-type foes - for ten whole minutes.
Between the sheer glut of enemies thrown at the player and the scarcity of checkpoints, it's a major source of frustration for many and represents by far the most divisive single set-piece in the entire game.
Even if you've perfected the combat by this point, it can't do much to help you here.
