10 Intense Video Game Endings That Blew Us Away
8. Inside
Playdead's chillingly ambiguous puzzle-platformer Inside won't be forgotten by anyone who played it, especially as it takes a bonkers left-turn in its chaotic finale.
For the most part Inside is a subtle, slight game as the player controls a young boy traversing a dystopic world, evading guards and solving puzzles in order to progress.
But at game's end the tone changes drastically, when the boy reaches a laboratory within which a large, fleshy blob known as the Huddle is housed.
The boy is eventually pulled into the Huddle by its eerily protruding limbs, at which point the player gains control of the creature, smashing free of its confinement and steamrolling anyone who gets in its way.
After a visceral escape sequence, the Huddle rolls down a hill to settle at a sun-kissed cliff edge, before the game promptly ends.
Though Inside's puzzling finale did prove divisive with players, there's no denying that few could've expected such a heightened, outlandish conclusion to a game that was otherwise so modest and restrained.
