2. Mr X - Resident Evil 2

When horror fans purposefully go out of their way to remove an entire game mechanic in order to save their tickers from cardiac arrest, you know its passed the scare test with flying colours.

Resident Evil 2's Mr X, despite the tirade of memes and mods morphing the bioweapon from human-hunting Tyrant to child-friendly tank engine, retains his badge of honour as gaming's scariest boogeyman - a testament to Capcom's envious attention to detail. The slow, purposeful thud of footsteps - as they grow louder, louder, louder - to the deafening off-screen stomps as it relentlessly gives chase to its prey, the tension is almost is almost tangible.

I'll never forget the brief, self-assured period of safety I felt in the RCPD's zombie-free main hall, moments before Mr X strolled into view, blatantly flaunting the rules that his undead brethren were made to adhere to.

And to think: Nemesis will be even more cunning than our fedora-loving pursuer. Get the defibrilator ready.
