7. Heroes of Newerth
Fantasy games - specifically MMOs - are quite notorious for having extremely annoying online communities, rife with elitism and nerds whose only avenue for venting their frustration with their life is an expansive, fantastical world in which they can assert a misguided sense of superiority over anyone who is a lower level than them. More so than even far more pervasive games of this type, Heroes of Newerth takes the spirit of competition to new, more disturbing levels, as players frequently take the game far too seriously, to the point that a "n00b" just starting out might be tempted to just never return. While its learning curve is one thing, the rude, oddly angry players who will scream as many obscenities as possible at you while you try to get a lay of the land is completely needless excess all on its own. However, there has been justice in a form, as player subscriptions began dropping off extremely quickly, and barely a year after it was released, it became free-to-play.
