10 Last-Minute Plot Twists That Ruined Amazing Video Games

6. All You Need Is Hope - God Of War III

SCE Santa Monica

God of War III is still one of the most epic action games of all time. It contains amazing set pieces punctuated by brutal acts of violence in service to an irresistible tale of revenge, which had been built up in two games prior. This was to be the grand finale of Kratos' journey, but unfortunately it all starts to peter out when the game drops a twist that changes everything.

After finding Pandora's Box to be empty, Kratos realizes that he had the power of Hope within him all along, and that he needed to rid himself of his guilt in order to kill Zeus. The reason this twist was so poorly received is that it feels overly sentimental, which is tonally wrong for the God of War series. It is, frankly, a bit corny, and that is the last thing you expect in a game chock full of boobs and blood.

Fans just wanted to see Kratos get his revenge on Zeus and the Olympian gods. As is too often the case with many games, it decided to be experimental and idealistic, but it doesn't work because it never earns it. The God of War games were never been about deep philosophical or intellectual ideas, making its attempt to steer in this direction in its final moments mostly ineffective. They'd have better luck trying it a few years later...
