Assassin's Creed III was hyped as the monumental conclusion that the series had supposedly been building up to. Instead the game spun its wheels until the very end, presenting fans with a surprise twist that works to set up future games rather than end the story.

The truth is that Juno, who had been guiding Desmond all along, wants to actually control mankind and urges him to release her in order to save humanity from the impending solar flare. He does just that, but at the expense of his life, and it ends with the apocalypse being averted and Juno on the loose.

This twist commits multiple narrative sins. It comes within the last ten minutes of the game, so it feels rushed. It forces a choice on the hero, the outcome of which goes against the very principles that had been guiding him, making it thematically inconsistent. And worst of all, it doesn't conclude the story.

Sure, the setting of the Revolutionary War and the rise of Connor makes for a solid stand alone game in the series, but this final twist overshadows nearly all of this positivity because, as an ending to a story that started with Desmond, it is a colossal disappointment that turns you off from picking up the next instalment in the series.
