10 Last-Minute Plot Twists That Ruined Amazing Video Games

10. It Was All A Dream - Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo

The 'it was all a dream' trope is universally derided, and for good reason. People don't like finding out that a story has no emotional or physical consequence for the protagonist, and the revelation that it was all a dream accomplishes such a feat in the laziest way possible. So with that in mind, you can imagine the look of disappointment on Nintendo fans' faces when Super Mario Bros. 2 ended with the reveal that the entire game was Mario's dream?

Look, it's not like early Mario games had the most engaging plots; they used barebone storylines as an anchor for the gameplay. Still, the idea that the entire world, along with all of its colorful landscapes and creatures, are merely figments of Mario's imagination isn't satisfying in the slightest, nor does it further develop the world established in the previous Mario game.

In hindsight, this ending is understandable given the development history of the game. Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually converted from an entirely separate and original game titled Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic - literally, 'Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic' - which explains the significant differences in both the game design and art style from the first game - and the ending.

Still, even with this excuse, there is no such thing as a good 'it was all a dream' ending, making this twist as lame as it is relatively harmless.
