10 Lazy Plot Devices That Ruin Awesome Games

7. Amnesia

Amnesia is a crappy plot device no matter what the medium; it infuriated me when Teri Bauer became afflicted with it for so long in Season 1 of 24, and really, the only interesting movie depiction of the condition I can think of is in Christopher Nolan's sublime Memento. In video games, players will often start the game waking up as the protagonist who has no memory, and throughout the game we come to learn who they are and how they wound up this way. Developers might think they're being clever by using this device to avoid overt exposition as so many games do, but it so often comes across as cheap and lazy. Furthermore, few video game writers ever engage with the condition in a remotely authentic way, given that there are several different types of amnesia. Video games tend to opt for a more simplistic, unambiguous full memory wipe. Any time a character suffers from the condition I instantly groan, either suspicious that a twist is being set up, or that it's a lazy way to avoid writing a back story.
