10 Lazy Plot Devices That Ruin Awesome Games

5. Everything Can Be Exploded

Don't get me wrong, I love exploding stuff in video games as much as the next person, but there really needs to be a limit on this, or at least a creative re-evaluation of how this comes to pass. I return again to my recent play through the latest Tomb Raider game where, on a remote island, there are literally thousands of explosive barrels just lying around, ready for Lara to fire at. If that doesn't make sense enough, why would the bad guys brazenly patrol around an area that could be lit up so easily? While I love the ability to blow things to smithereens, can't developers be a little more creative about it? It seems like these days, just about everything will blow up if you hit it hard enough. Perhaps more games need to give players the ability to set things alight - like Lara's flaming bow - rather than rely on silly cartoonish items like this for our wanton destruction.
