10 Lazy Plot Devices That Ruin Awesome Games

3. Busy Work

One of the worst things ever in any game is busy work, whereby developers pad out their game by forcing you to jump through hoops that are either immensely repetitive or just extremely boring. Just about every game in the survival horror genre is full of this, because the innate nature of the premise - that you're isolated in a scary building/place - doesn't allow you to have anyone else to bounce dialogue off to fill the gaps. Instead, you're forced into scenarios where you have to find 4 switches in order to open a door, and though you might have to face a few enemies in each area, it makes the game feel like a chore. Games are supposed to be fun, but these sections never are; they usually lead to something big like a boss battle, but by the time that rolls around, most players are already exhausted or deflated from having to run around like an errand boy. It is never enjoyable.
