The Nintendo franchise that would be most at home on mobile devices would of course be Super Mario Bros. If Nintendo aren't sure whether theres an audience for their most iconic hero, then they need look no further than the huge number of rip-off titles that have been released down the years. Ranging from the subtle to the downright shameless, these smartphone Mario clones have included Ultra Dario, Monino and Super Jump World even Flappy Bird owed much of its aesthetic to the little red plumber. It's easy to see why side-scrolling platformers would catch the imagination of mobile gamers. Each level is self-contained, making them perfect for short gaming sessions. The controls are straightforward enough for anyone to understand, but when designed correctly, the levels provide enough of a challenge to test even the most experienced players, giving the games a universal appeal. The simple controls, the subtly difficult level design and the classic run and jump formula that inspired so many future games; if theres one series that could kick-start Nintendos mobile gaming push, its Super Mario Bros.
