If there's one thing the past decade has taught anyone, it's that adding tribal tattoos to something doesn't make it cool - it dates the living hell out of it.
You couldn't tell Radical Entertainment though, and once Naughty Dog had left the orange marsupial to the whims of whichever creative party fancied adopting him, it was a full rework of the character that removed the pugnacious loveable attitude he previously had in every screenshot, replacing it with a voice (!!) and a cutesy child-friendly exterior.
