Here's the gist: as far back as the 1200s, people spoke of a city that was "white as a dove". They referred to it as "The Oasis of Little Birds". According to the Kitab al Kanuz -- a lost Arabic manuscript from the 15th century -- the city is said to contain untold amounts of treasure. It also states that the city is guarded by giants, who protect a sleeping king and queen.

In 1481, a camel driver told a story about surviving a sandstorm that killed the rest of his caravan, and finding himself entering Zerzura through a wadi (valley) that ran between two mountains. A large bird statue stood above the city gates.

Inside, the city was full of palm trees, springs, pools, and brilliant, shiny white homes. It was populated by fair-skinned, blue-eyed people who carried straight swords instead of scimitars (indicating that they may have been Crusaders who got lost in the Sahara on their way back from Jerusalem).

He was given a gold and ruby ring, which eventually fell into the possession of Libya's King Idris (who ruled until 1969).

Look at that. Mysterious rings, medieval manuscripts, ancient gates in the desert... Doesn't that scream Uncharted?
