2. Vagrant Story

Deadly Premonition Agent Morgan
Squaresoft

The tragedy that befell Squaresoft's Chrono Cross is a tale as old as time. Being the long-awaited sequel to Chrono Trigger, this PSOne game was expected to be a smash-hit. But since Squaresoft's other RPG, Final Fantasy IX, was released at the same time, Chrono Cross was overshadowed, despite receiving high acclaim.

However, people forget that Chrono Cross overshadowed another Squaresoft RPG! During that time, the company released a new role-playing title called Vagrant Story. It was immediately recognised for its gorgeous score, intuitive story, and vast customisation options. The game separated itself from Squaresoft's other titles by having a more contemporary aesthetic and a creative battle system.

It became the third game ever to receive a perfect score from Famitsu, which is among the world's harshest game magazines. This means Vagrant Story was ranked as highly as Skyrim, GTA V, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Not only that, it was the ONLY game on the PlayStation to receive this rating. (Not even Final Fantasy VII has that distinction!)

But since it was the least marketable of the Playstation's RPGs at that time, Vagrant Story never stood a chance.
