428: Shibuya Scramble feels it was impossible to market. (Most people switch off just by hearing the title.) 428 is a visual novel game where you solve mysteries around Tokyo as multiple characters, unaware of each other's involvement.

Now, based on that premise, you'd think this title would only appeal to a very niche group. But in reality, 428 was beloved by all for its highly detailed branching storyline and in-depth characterisation. Destructoid said it was "the most persuasive argument" to incorporate live-action in video games. Boasting a monumental 87 different endings, 428 also had incredible replay value.

But despite being collectively praised and ported on six different consoles, most people never heard of 428: Shibuya Scramble.

Since it's a Tokyo-based game, you'd assume it at least did well in Japan. But the game tanked in its native land, with seven other games outselling it the same week it was released.

Sadly, 428 proves a sad truth about the industry: Even though society say they're bored of the same-old same-old and they want something different, 99% of people won't give titles like 428 a second look, despite the fact it's guaranteed to give you a gaming experience you'll never forget.
