10 Misleading Video Game Ads That Lied To Get Your Money

2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

What you were promised: Another rip-roaring espionage thriller, headed up by everyone's new favourite hero, Solid Snake. What you got: A 20 minute long introductory level that could be missed entirely, followed by a 10 hour campaign with a completely new character. You've got Mass Effect 3 for the most disappointing finale to a game, but MGS 2's infamous 'Raiden switch' takes the cake for the most confusing. Following the realisation that the 'Snake' we were watching infiltrate the Big Shell was just a codename, the rest of MGS 2 played out like a strange fever dream. Thankfully the gameplay was exemplary and Solid Snake himself was still in the story as an undercover Seal Team member who later revealed his true identity, but what you can't shake, is how there much pre-release footage was created only mislead and lie to you. Metal Gear RAY was seen on the Tanker level as more of a boss fight, Snake was shown having a showdown with a ninja/Grey Fox once again - there was even a weapon (the FAMAS machine gun) that was nowhere to be found in the game (but was reported to be in early pressings of the demo). In the end, the entire thing was done to make you long for Snake and frame him from a rookie's perspective, but considering buyers didn't realise what had been shown was all taken from the opening level, it's some of the most deceptive advertising in gaming history that only skated by because we loved Kojima so much at the time.
