10 Misleading Video Game Ads That Lied To Get Your Money

7. Watch Dogs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcMRkyoHKeA What you were promised: The 'next generation start here', complete with some astonishingly gorgeous graphics and a dynamic multiplayer that would provide a unique experience. What you got: Something that looked like it belonged in 2008, a generic open-world template and a game that - even after two delays - didn't have any noticeable improvements. Speaking to an employee at a games store a week after Watch Dogs came out, he noted Watch Dogs had became their most returned game ever. They were literally turning people away from the store, because they were far over capacity on used copies - so many gamers en masse had bought Ubisoft's trainwreck to see for themselves, before returning it within almost exactly the same timeframe. Sometimes we gamers tap into that sort of 'hivemind' thought process and unify for or against something (try finding someone who doesn't LOVE The Witcher 3, for example), but for Watch Dogs it felt unanimously venomous. People out n' out hated what they were presented with. Graphics were considerably downgraded from what was shown (despite PC modders finding the original renders in the code and restoring it to what was advertised), additional modes added after a lengthy delay amounted to a 'spider-tank' drug sequence, the game's protagonist was unlikeable to the point of disgust - and the whole thing played like My First Open-World: The Game. In the end, Ubisoft had to scrap all their plans for Watch Dogs being the replacement for Assassin's Creed in the long haul, and whilst you can guarantee they're going to try a Watch Dogs 2 at some point, at that moment the wave of groans will be deafening.
