5. No One Is Ready For The First Attack - Undertale

There are some bosses that are so difficult, it doesn't seem feasible to beat them on the first try.

But Sans from Undertale takes this concept to a greater extreme. No matter what preparations you've made or how wary you are of Sans' brutal difficulty, everybody dies upon the first encounter before he's finished his first attack.

The reason why is simple - it comes out of nowhere. The first time you initiate this battle, Sans starts talking about the beauty of the world, the blooming flowers, and the singing birds. Because of the way he speaks, you assume this is the beginning of a drawn-out speech, which is pretty standard for final bosses.

But while in mid-sentence, he suddenly launches an array of bones and Gaster Blasters at you, which hit you from every direction. By the time the player realises the fight has already begun, it's too late. If you haven't moved within the first second, you're going to have a bad time. The fact that Sans is the only enemy who takes the first turn rather than the protagonist is another reason why the player is caught off-guard.
