10 Mistakes Nintendo Got Away With (Because They're Nintendo)

2. Philips CD-i

Philips Cdi
Philips

As they say, the bigger they are the harder they fall. After the Sony debacle, Nintendo instead partnered with Philips and brought about what many consider the worst console of all time.

What makes this so much worse isn't that it failed, it's that it seemingly never had a chance to succeed. With the commercial failure of the SEGA CD, Nintendo decided it didn't want a CD peripheral for the SNES, backing Philips into a corner and forcing them to create their own system.

What came from this was a highly questionable console with a retail price of $700, unimaginative controllers, and focus on other media. The titles themselves that were released for the system also served little purpose other than to become fodder for memes in the age of the internet. Just Google "Zelda CD-i" or "Hotel Mario", and sit back while you enjoy hours of cringeworthy laughs.

Luckily, thanks to the stellar new titles on the SNES and the new ground broken with the N64, this horrific mistake was largely forgotten, and we're all the more grateful for it.
