10 Modern Video Game Tropes Everyone Is Rejecting
3. Four Player Co-Op Games
While there are countless and excellent games that are designed to be a single-player experience, there are likewise plenty of other excellent ones out there which are best enjoyed with friends. Whether it’s enjoying some couch co-op, setting out on a quest with a group, or getting everyone together for an evening of party games, company is always welcome.
What we don’t need more of, though, is more four-player co-op games. Especially within the horror genre.
Titles like Left 4 Dead and its sequel showed how exhilarating the four-player format could be for a horror experience, with the more recent likes of Phasmophobia’s co-operative ghost hunting gameplay proving how well it can work when done right. However, this formula has since become the go-to template for developers to jump on the latest trend.
In just the last few years, we’ve seen the likes of Devour, Back 4 Blood, GTFO, Pacify, Ghost Watchers, Lunch Lady, Forwarned, Sign Of Silence, and Labyrinthine just to name a few. And that’s not mentioning the plethora of asymmetrical horrors out there either.
Though there’s nothing specifically wrong with this format, the burnout has started to set in at this point.
