4. Baldur - God Of War

You don't need me to tell you that Kratos is a pretty tough dude. Throughout each and every God of War game, the Spartan has performed some ridiculous feats of strength, taken out monsters 100 times his size and delivered enough pain to make him the stuff of legend. Even with a little bit of vacation time, none of that had changed by the time 2018's soft-reboot came around. That was, however, until Baldur comes knocking.

Though he's initially known as "The Stranger", the Norse god turns up on Kratos' doorstep, seemingly there for his son, Atreus. The two get into a massive superhero fight that literally reshapes the ground around them, before it's revealed that thanks to his invincibility, Baldur can shake off anything that's thrown at him. Kratos can't win and for the first time he's on the back foot. Your stomach sinks the the same way it did when you realised Batman was going to lose to Bane in The Dark Knight Rises - there's something terrifying in seeing this powerful hero being totally pummelled.

From there on out, every time he shows up you know he's a major threat, and each time Kratos and Atreus barely get out alive. However, when his invincibility spell is broken, you finally get the chance to battle him on a fair playing field, and, despite the begging of his mother, Kratos gleefully snaps his neck.
