10 MORE Scariest Levels In Non-Horror Video Games

9. Aftermath - Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

“Horror” doesn’t spring to mind when Call of Duty is mentioned. Sure, horrors of war, but COD doesn’t do horrors of war. COD does horrors of pay-to-win business models and being no-scoped by a foul-mouthed 9 year old. That’s a different list.

For true horror, we go back to the original Modern Warfare. Old heads will rightly shout out the masterful tension of “All Ghillied Up,” but even commando-crawling through Chernobyl isn’t COD’s most chilling moment. That comes at the end of poor Paul Jackson’s tenure as Modern Warfare’s protagonist. Everything seems on track for a classic action climax, as the helicopter carrying Jackson and his team hurtles away, barely ahead of a detonating nuke. The screen blanks.

Oh my, thinks the astute gaming aficionado. Will Paul wake up in hospital? Or die, gasp, transitioning to a suitably patriotic remembrance sequence? What shall we press to pay respects?

Nope. Paul comes to, watches the deaths of his friends, struggles a bit in the filth, and dies.

The player is in control throughout. Nothing you do will help.

First-person death by radiation poisoning. You know? Maybe we called that “videogames can’t deliver the horrors of war” play a little early.
