Shoutout to commenter Gabriel Brasil for this. Any excuse to praise the excellent Republic Commando, which has been due a sequel since the late Mesozoic. Seriously, y’all, there’s a real lightsaber on YouTube. Baby Yoda probably has three spinoffs and a mixtape coming. Where in the name of Lando’s immaculate stache is Republic Commando 2?

Anyway. It is a truth universally acknowledged that every excellent FPS must have one stealth level where they take all your stuff. At worst, it’s a slog. At best, it’s an ego check, demanding new skills and rewarding them with lore and loot.

“Ghost Ship Recon” is all that with a shot of panic. You start alone in a space you can barely navigate. By now you love your squadmates like your own dear sons – seriously, squad banter alone makes Republic Commando a must-play – and you’re desperate. The game gleefully squeezes your adrenals as you traverse the mazelike ship, pelting you with thrashing droids and surreal Trandoshan warriors, all rolling martial arts and inhuman grace.

“GSR” doesn’t break the mold of FPS stealth and some elements haven’t aged well. But tense atmosphere, tight plotting and perfect design make this level a masterpiece of SF horror.
