10 More Underrated Video Games Way Ahead Of Their Time
6. Alien Resurrection
At the time of its original 2000 release, Alien Resurrection was largely dismissed as yet another me-too video game adaptation cynically cashing in on a major movie license.
Yet the PS1-exclusive title was actually one of the first games to utilise a twin stick control scheme, with the DualShock controller's analogue sticks being used to move and aim at the same time - a majorly revolutionary concept for its era.
Hilariously, the control scheme was actually considered frustrating and awkward upon release: a now-infamous GameSpot review even called the controls "almost unplayably difficult."
Yet barely a year after Alien Resurrection's release, twin stick controls were popularised by Halo: Combat Evolved, which forever changed how FPS games were played on consoles while also taking all the credit for the innovation.
Alien Resurrection is certainly a plenty flawed game - it's super difficult and the graphics were pretty wonky even at launch - but it was absolutely instrumental in ushering in an FPS "game feel" that's persisted for almost 25 years.
