10 Most Annoying Video Game Levels Ever Made
5. Lightning Lookout (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)
Here's a sentence nobody's ever spoken: "You know what this game needs? More undodgeable attacks".
The Donkey Kong Country series is known for having plenty of difficult levels in its ranks. But no matter how hard these levels are, at least they're fair. The same cannot be said for Lightning Lookout.
As you'd expect from its name, your objective in this level is to proceed through somewhat-standard platforming while avoiding lightning. The lightning isn't too difficult to avoid in the first half of the level, but the second half is just flat-out unfair.
After you reach the midway save barrel, the lightning becomes so fast that it's near-impossible to avoid. It can even predict your movement and strike you based on where you'll end up at the speed you're moving at. To make matters worse, there are swimming sections. If that lightning hits any part of that water while you're in it, then say goodbye.
F**k. This. Gimmick.
Thankfully, the bonus sections and DK Coin are not difficult to reach, so you're likely to be done with this level for good once you beat it. But given how cheap this level is, beating it is going to take a considerable amount of time.
This level is one of the reasons why Donkey Kong Country 3 gets so much more flack than its antecedents do. It's cheap, it's annoying, and it's straight-up not fun.
