10 Most Awesome Video Game Openings

1. Medal of Honour: Allied Assault

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3EnVrAquBA To be fair, we're cheating a little bit here, because on the PC version of this game, the Omaha Beach sequence was actually not the first level in the game, though it is the intense peak at which the game really "begins". On the PS2 version of the game, titled Frontline, it is, however, the opening level. Regardless, what this sequence did so well is to essentially recreate the same cinematic feel of Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan - he helped create this game - as the Normandy landings take place and the Allied soldiers try to storm Omaha Beach. It's one of those jaw-dropping moments that helped define video games as a cinematic medium, immersing us in a brutal, visually lavish sequence that, despite having aged not so well these days, still stands as an important landmark step in video game history. Epic isn't even the word; at the time, this was next-level gaming. What are your favourite openings to video games? Let us know in the comments below.
